Nature of the Job An Oiler works in the engineering department of a ship. He is the unlicensed member of this department so the oiler position is one of the lower ranks. The only position in the engine department of a ship that is lower than the oiler is the wiper. Basic Tasks:
· The Oiler also operates and maintains the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. · The maintenance of hotel facilities inside the ship such as sewage, lighting, air-condition and water systems is also the responsibility of an oiler. · An Oiler helps in bulk fuel transfers. They also assist in the operation of the ship's boats and other nautical tasks. They specifically deal with cargo loading/discharging gear and safety systems. However this function of cargo discharge is still the responsibility of the deck workers and officers. Education and Training Requirements: To be qualified for the Oiler position in the United States Merchant Marine, one needs to have a Merchant Mariner's Document issued by the United States Coast Guard. The international conventions and agreements make it necessary for oilers to also be documented in their respective countries. The nature of their job requires them to have training in firefighting and first aid. |
